Choosing the right color scheme for your bedroom – looking good vs. providing a good night’s sleep

Bedroom color choice is just a question of style, a matter that can be adhered accordingly to individual preferences… or is it?

A team of experts at Edinburgh Sleep Centre in Great Britain has conducted a thorough study on the subject. The research involved two thousand households and has led to quite surprising findings – unsuitable color theme of your bedroom can substantially shorten your sleep by 25%!

Research-based choice of a bedroom color theme

As far as science is concerned, blue has been proven most favorable. It can have a positive effect on our health, lowering blood pressure and pulse rate and therefore help obtaining a good night’s sleep. Blue surroundings usually mean approx. 7 hours 52 minutes of being soundly asleep. Following winners were:

  1. bedrooms in yellow (7 hours 40 minutes),
  2. green bedroom decor (7 hours 36 minutes),
  3. silver bedroom design (7 hours 33 minutes).

It’s advised to best avoid brown, grey and - most of all – purple, which usually delivered no more than 5 hrs and 56 mins of sleep. You may ask - why is purple most favored by decorators as modern and highly elegant, but advised against by scientists? Purple’s quite effective in stimulating brain work, expanding imagination, addressing the subconscious and simultaneously making attaining a good night’s sleep more difficult. Most certainly sought out in workplace, but the opposite in bedroom.

The research also revealed some of more ‘spicy’ statistics – red, quite the contrary to popular belief, doesn’t benefit marriage life. Couples having their bedrooms in red décor were by one-third less eager to exercise in bedroom than others sleeping in rooms decorated in caramel.

Bedroom design ideas for teen boys and girls

Helpful tricks how to decorate a teen’s room with just a few accessories

Decorating a teenager's room can come as quite a challenge for a parent. Adolescents often have their own uncompromisable concept of decor that may put off even the most tolerable live-in relative. Help yourself with a handful of our smart tricks to make a teenage bedroom a comfortable and efficient learning environment and a teen's kingdom full of all the fun stuff at the same time.

Do It Yourself: How to decorate a teenage girl’s bedroom with a personal touch

In a teenage girl's bedroom, color schemes that usually work best are warm and delicate with a bit of wash-out effect. Always keep in mind not to overdo it – if you decide to go for a bright, bold wall paint or wallpaper instead, you might want to make it a one-wall accent and contrast it with white, ivory or even beige. This will make the space more sensible and - more importantly - comparatively lustrous. Same rule applies when setting-up a teen boy’s bedroom.
A girl's room should be a welcoming area for friends coming over for a chit-chat or some gossip. Therefore, you should mind to provide a comfortable sitting area with a bunch of cute designer poufs or fluffy oversize floor cushions to give it a feeling of cozy surroundings.
A pinboard will make a practical wall accessory that photos and notes can be stuck to. Also, it’s easy to assemble, so that your teen daughter can get engaged and have her go at setting up their own room. Don't forget to leave some spare space to pin posters, inspiring prints on canvas and other girly hand-painted pictures of your daughter’s choice.

Is decorating a teen boy’s bedroom any different?

Interior design of a teenage boy's bedroom should express the youngster's interests in sports, rock music, racing cars or whatever subject your teenage son seems to be into. Each of these gives you the opportunity to bring out the theme for the bedroom's design and make it a more sophisticated wall décor. Depending on your son's preferences, you can decide on either bright primary colors or a bit toned-down wall paint – only sky is the limit.
It’s worth a shot to consider industrial influences in the modern interior design that will manifest technical motives, especially loved by boys – lamps, graphite metal finish of furniture or brick photo wallpaper.
